The facts behind Trump's claim

No one weakened the military

Is Cruz right?

CC / Seyed Shahaboddin Vajedi

Ted Cruz says the nuclear deal lifted international sanctions for an Irani general accused of killing Americans. That’s partially true.

Qassem Soleimani is the leader of Iran’s Quds Force, accused of supplying weapons in Iraq to kill Americans. He’ll have his travel ban lifted and foreign assets unfrozen if the deal with Iran is finalized.

But U.N. sanctions on Soleimani wouldn’t be lifted for another eight years. And the White House has made clear U.S. sanctions will remain in place indefinitely. Still, the general will feel some relief as a result of the deal.
